With the trade deadline roughly 3 weeks away, there is a pretty definitive guide as to who is competing, and who is selling. We’ve seen a logjam of sorts as sellers have high prices, and thus far contenders are unwilling to pay those prices. But, if history has shown anything, teams will meet in the middle and deals will get done.
Keep in mind, players mentioned here as available, and good fits are largely based on their production and/or ratings this season. If you don’t have any players on the available list, and don’t have them mentioned, that’s on you. I’ve been asking for over a week for names, and for teams to update trade blocks! Get them up so people know what you have to sell!
We’ve seen some big names move already like Kris Bryant, Nolan Arenado, Zach Wheeler, Jed Lowrie, Jon Gray, Lorenzo Cain, Matt Wieters, Keone Kela and others, we anticipate more fireworks as the deadline approaches. Here is a look at some of the buyers, and the sellers, as well as specific pieces that may be moving.
Defined Buyers
Toronto, Boston, Tampa, Yankees, White Sox, Detroit, Texas, Angels, Washington, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, San Diego, San Francisco, Dodgers
Literally half the league is in the thick of the playoff race, which is awesome to see. Texas has the bigges lead at 8.5 games, but the Angels are still dangerous, should they get healthy, and only 1 game back in the division. A key trade or two by a few of the contenders can make all the difference between post season play, or wrapping things up early. With that said, there is no shortage of talent available, and all the above teams have shown some willingness to add.
Let’s look at each team individually, and what their team is lacking right now, as well as some pieces that are available, and they may be willing to move.
Toronto Blue Jays – lead division by 6.5 games
Runs Scored – 3rd
Runs Allowed – 3rd
Weaknesses – Runs scored ranking is a mirage. The team is lacking pop and OBP, but is propped up by the second most stolen bases. Expect offense to fall. Ranked 11th in AL in home runs and OBP.
Position(s) to address – They haven’t gotten much out of the SS position this year as Elvis Andrus and Dixon Machado have been adequate at best. Their 4th & 5th starter positions also have been adequate at best, and likely worse than that.
Pieces to move – Zach Jackson, Jarred Kelenic, Bo Naylor, Rowdy Tellez, Luis Lopez
Good Fits – Danny Duffy (KC), Brandon Crawford (NYY)
Boston Red Sox – trail division by 6.5 – lead WC by 1
Runs Scored – 7th
Runs Allowed – 4th
Weaknesses – Team strikes out a lot. Runs scored looks like it should trend higher a bit, but another power bat would be a good add. Matt Adams has been a disaster at 1st base with the bat.
Position(s) to address – Upgrade at first base is a must. With that alone the Sox could be 2-3 wins better. Need another starter as Bumgarner is still out a few months.
Pieces to move – Jackson Kowar, Kyle Funkhouser, Sean Hjelle
Good Fits – Wil Myers (LAA), Joe Mauer (KC), Johnny Cueto (Mia), Jason Vargas (CHC)
Tampa Rays – trail division by 7.5 – lead 2nd WC by 1
Runs Scored – 4th
Runs Allowed – 1st
Weaknesses – Offense has actually been lucky to have been as productive as it has. A power bat or two is needed to sustain this rank. Pitching wise, they’ve been great.
Position(s) to address – Getting next to nothing out of Adam Eaton in right field, but you have to think he eventually starts hitting. DH is a need as well as Chris Davis and Robbie Grossman have been useless.
Pieces to move –
Travis Swaggerty, Sein Reid-Foley
Good Fits – Luis Valbuena (KC), Dominic Smith (Hou), Ben Zobrist (Ari)
New York Yankees – trail division by 8.5 – trail WC by 1
Runs Scored – 11th
Runs Allowed – 5th
Weaknesses – Need some hitters to put the ball in play, and there’s no team speed to speak of. Pitching has been solid, very good at keeping the ball in the yard.
Position(s) to address – Centerfield has been a black hole offensively, as has second base and right field.
Pieces to move – Has been shopping Brendan Crawford at short, and Ryan Braun in left/first. Deep farm system, but guys like Garrett Hampson, and Beau Burrows could be available.
Good Fits – Rajai Davis (CHC), Josh Harrison (Hou), Josh Reddick (Ari)
Chicago White Sox – lead division by 1
Runs Scored – 1st
Runs Allowed – 9th
Weaknesses – Pitching, pitching, and pitching. We knew this would happen as the team is loaded offensively, but lacking the arms. Doubt remains if it will work in the post season. Expect the ChiSox to aggressively target arms.
Position(s) to address – Have we mentioned pitching
Pieces to move – Julio Rodriguez, Ronny Mauricio, Daniel Johnson, Logan Gilbert
Good Fits – Steven Strasburg (LAA), Danny Duffy (KC), Luis Castillo (Mia), Carlos Carrasco (Col), Tyler Beede (Hou), AJ Minter (Hou), Mark Rzepczynski (CHC)
Detroit Tigers – trail division by 1 – Trail 2nd WC by 6
Runs Scored – 9th
Runs Allowed – 8th
Weaknesses – GM. Tigers strike out a ton, but also don’t walk much. Pitching is middle of the pack, outside of Britton, bullpen hasn’t been great. Plenty of holes. Record is partly a product of a terrible division.
Position(s) to address – RP, SP, 3B
Pieces to move – Tony Santillan, Hector Perez, Shledon Neuse, Chris Shaw, Jake Marisnick
Good Fits – Luis Valbuena (KC), Lance Lynn (NYM), Luis Castillo (Mia), Chris Rusin (Hou), Tommy Hunter (COL)
Texas Rangers – lead division by 8.5
Runs Scored – 2nd
Runs Allowed – 2nd
Weaknesses – A very well rounded team. They could use a bat or two that can get more extra base hits, and their pitchers don’t strike many people out. They’ve been somewhat lucky with BABIP, which tends to even out.
Position(s) to address – DH, 2B due to Cesar Hernandez injury, high strikeout RP or two, specifically a lefty.
Pieces to move – Hans Crouse, Sandy Alcantara, Will Smith, Alex Faedo, JB Bukauskas
Good Fits – Roberto Usuna (CHC), AJ Minter (Hou), Tyler Wade (KC), Albert Pujols (KC), Nick Burdi (CHC)
Los Angeles Angels – trail division by 8.5 – trail 2nd WC by 1.5
Runs Scored – 5th
Runs Allowed – 6th
Weaknesses – Health. Offensively the team hits for plenty of power, there’s just no-one on base in front of the guys hitting bombs. Pitching has been great at preventing the long ball, but the bullpen has been disappointing, and overall the staff doesn’t strike enough people out.
Position(s) to address – Familia, Dyson and Roe have been good in the pen, otherwise it’s a disaster. Chapman blowing his elbow out didn’t help. Wil Myers is miscast in right and needs moved to 1st quickly. A competent corner outfield bat that can get on base would be perfect.
Pieces to move – Trevor Rogers, Braden Bishop, Matt Thaiss, Nico Hoerner, TJ Friedl
Good Fits – Mark Rzepczynski (CHC), Kelvin Herrera (KC), Tyler Clippard (Mia), Melky Cabrera (KC), Ben Zobrist (Ari)
Washington Nationals – lead division by 1.5
Runs Scored – 3rd
Runs Allowed – 7th
Weaknesses – Another power bat, or speed guy would help the offense. Primarily a upgrade to the starters as their ERA is the worst stat on the team pitching wise.
Position(s) to address – SP, Utility OF
Pieces to move – Nolan Gorman, Ronaldo Hernandez, Dustin May, Jacob Nix, Isaac Paredes
Good Fits – Luis Castillo (Mia), Danny Duffy (KC), Steven Strasburg (LAA), Hyun-Jin Ryu (Hou), Carlos Carrasco (Col), Ben Zobrist (Ari)
Philadelphia Phillies – trail division by 1.5 – lead 2nd WC by 4.5
Runs Scored – 9th
Runs Allowed – 2nd
Weaknesses – The offense simply hasn’t gotten on base. They have power, the run well, they just don’t have the guys on base to do damage. The pitching has been very good, a bit susceptible to the long ball, but very solid all around.
Position(s) to address – They’ve gotten almost no production from the middle infield offensively. A good bat at SS or 2B would be a welcome addition.
Pieces to move – Luis Gonzalez, Shane McClanahan, Oneil Cruz, Sean Murphy, Adam Haseley
Good Fits – Josh Harrison (Hou), Scooter Gennett (Cin), Brandon Crawford (NYY)
Milwaukee Brewers – lead division by .5
Runs Scored – 1st
Runs Allowed – 3rd
Weaknesses – The starters ERA is actually 9th in the NL, though the bullpen has been lights out. Offensively, the team doesn’t run at all, and strikes out a lot. But they can mash, and get on base.
Position(s) to address – Starting pitching. They have some good names, and ponied up early to trade for Jon Gray. But the results just haven’t been there.
Pieces to move – Hunter Greene, Connor Scott, Corey Ray, Justin Dunn, Dennis Santana
Good Fits – Luis Castillo (Mia), Johnny Cueto (Mia), Danny Duffy (KC), Hyun-Jin Ryu (Hou)
Cincinnati Reds – trail division by .5 – lead WC by 4
Runs Scored – 2nd
Runs Allowed – 6th
Weaknesses – The pitching continues to issue too many free passes, and defensively, they’ve been very poor, especially in RF. Overall production in the outfield is a huge glaring hole.
Position(s) to address – Corner outfield spots
Pieces to move – Advertised as open to moving Scooter Gennett and Adalberto Mondesi. Albert Abreu, Kevin Neuman, Jose Siri
Good Fits – Josh Reddick (Ari), Lonnie Chisenhall (KC), Ben Zobrist (Ari)
San Diego Padres – lead division by 1.5
Runs Scored – 7th
Runs Allowed – 4th
Weaknesses – Statistically, the offense should be better at run production, a few more extra base hits would help for sure. But it works out, since defensively, they should allow a few more than they have. A solid team through and through though.
Position(s) to address – Upgrade over Russell Martin at catcher if possible, and figure out why Moose isn’t hitting.
Pieces to move – Ronald Guzman, Christian Arroyo, David Bote, Mauricio Dubon, Trent Thornton, Nick Neidert, Bryan Reynolds, Jeter Downs, Anthony Siegler, Josh Lowe, Jhoan Duran
Good Fits – AJ Minter (Hou), Roberto Osuna (CHC), Buster Posey (NYY), Francisco Cervelli (NYY), Luis Valbuena (KC)
San Francisco Giants – trail division by 1.5 – trail 2nd WC by 3.5
Runs Scored – 11th
Runs Allowed – 1st
Weaknesses – Hitting, hitting, and hitting. Outside of the amount of walks they have, the team has been terrible offensively. Kyle Seager and Anthony Rizzo aren’t enough to carry the rest of the team.
Position(s) to address – It’s been a disaster at shortstop all year as Tim Anderson has been terrible, and Alcides Escobar has been atrocious in limited work. Dickerson and Cruz have been passable in the corners, but an upgrade at CF over Jon Jay would be a welcome sight.
Pieces to move – Cavan Biggio, Logan Warmoth, Nate Pearson, Kevin Smith, Evan White
Good Fits – Brandon Crawford (NYY), Rajai Davis (CHC), Tyler Wade (KC), Josh Harrison (Hou)
Los Angeles Dodgers – trail division by 2.5- trail 2nd WC by 4.5
Runs Scored – 8th
Runs Allowed – 5th
Weaknesses – Upgrade at catcher over Gattis, simply for defensive purposes. Smoak has been brutal at 1st. and production in the middle infield has been poor.
Position(s) to address – SS, C, CL
Pieces to move – Jasrado Chisholm, Adbert Alzolay, Kevin Kramer, Yadier Alvarez, Kris Bubic
Good Fits – Roberto Osuna (CHC), AJ Minter (Hou), Buster Posey (NYY), Christian Arroyo (SD), Tyler Wade (KC)
List of available players (primary position listed)
