Part of a (hopeful) breakdown of each team and where they sit as they head into our first offseason, and into the 2019 season
The method
Listing a projected 9 man lineup, 5 man rotation, and 5 man pen.
Which teams profile out the best based on MLB 2018 WAR?
Any players who are free agents and need resigned or they go to the open market are notated with a *
Obvious flaws is this ignores a guy like Vladdy Guerrero, who will undoubtedly help a team in OOTP next year, but has a 0 WAR, so they more often than not will be listed as a bench guy.
Houston Astros
Projected 20 man roster WAR - 30.5
C - Welington Castillo (.7 WAR)
1B - Ronald Guzman (.7 WAR - 16hr in half a season)
2B - Rougned Odor (2.7 WAR)
3B - Brian Anderson (3.9 WAR)
SS - Xander Bogaerts (3.8 WAR)
LF - DJ Stewart (0.5 WAR)
CF - Jason Heyward (1.6 WAR)
RF - Gregory Polanco (1.9 WAR - 128+ OPS)
DH - Colin Moran (1 WAR)
Bench - C Victor Caratini, 1B Dominic Smith, CF Bradley Zimmer, LF/1B Trey Mancini, OF Teoscar Hernandez
SP - Blake Snell (7.5 WAR - Cy Young!)
SP - Robbie Ray (1.1 WAR)
SP - Zach Eflin (2.1 WAR)
SP - Daniel Mengden (.9 WAR)
SP - Jose Urena (1 WAR)
RP - Odrisamer Despaigne (-1.3 WAR)
RP - Tyler Beede (-.3 WAR)
RP - Tyler Glasnow (.7 WAR)
RP - Alex Colome (1.1 WAR)
CL - Tony Zych (1.6 WAR)
Financial Outlook
- about 82m in projected salaries next year, no key FA leaving. The biggest to do list internally is the possible arbitration for Bogarts, Ray and Colome. I'd expect long-term deals likely get worked out when a new GM comes aboard. Even with the projected arby figures (which will change no doubt when new ratings get applied and we roll forward), the team has about 68m in room under the 150m budget. Meaning they can possibly be in the market for a star player or two. Likely holes to fill would be a #2/3 starter, catcher, and maybe another 3B/DH type.
Analysis
- Rotation obviously top heavy with Snell, and bullpen needs a few more good pieces without a doubt. But the lineup is deep. There's multiple guys who hit 20HR last year (Polanco, Hernandez, Mancini, Bogarts), while Odor was close and Guzman had 16 in half a season. Power won't be a problem in this lineup, and there's plenty of potential for many to have breakout campaigns throughout the lineup.
- The Astros have one of the deeper lineups in the league. They're in good shape for a WC run, maybe even a run at the divison with a smart FA signing or two.
