Part of a (hopeful) breakdown of each team and where they sit as they head into our first offseason, and into the 2019 season
The method
Listing a projected 9 man lineup, 5 man rotation, and 5 man pen.
Which teams profile out the best based on MLB 2018 WAR?
Any players who are free agents and need resigned or they go to the open market are notated with a *
Obvious flaws is this ignores a guy like Vladdy Guerrero, who will undoubtedly help a team in OOTP next year, but has a 0 WAR, so they more often than not will be listed as a bench guy.
New York Yankees
Projected 20 man roster WAR – 32.9
C – Buster Posey (2.9 WAR)
1B – Jose Abreu (1.7 WAR)
2B – Devon Travis (0.6 WAR)
3B – Anthony Rendon (4.2 WAR)
SS – Brandon Crawford (2.6 WAR)
LF – Tony Kemp (.7 WAR)
CF – Manny Margot (1.5 WAR)
RF – Kiki Hernandez (2.8 WAR)
DH – Ryan Braun (1.1 WAR)
Bench - C Francisco Cervelli, MIF Garrett Hampson, OF Willie Calhoun, CF Eloy Jimenez, MIF Ryan Shimpf
SP – Zach Greinke (4.8 WAR)
SP – Walker Buehler (3.5 WAR)
SP – Shane Bieber (1.1 WAR)
SP – Nick Tropeano(.1 WAR)
SP – Justus Sheffield (-.1 WAR)
RP – Caleb Fergusen (.3 WAR)
RP – Xavier Cedeno (.9 WAR)
RP – Ryan Yarbrough (.9 WAR)
RP – Josh Hader (2.2 WAR)
CL – Wade Davis (1.1 WAR)
Financial Outlook
- 181.2m committed already with arby figures included. There’s no key FA at all. Team options on Martin Perez and Logan Morrison likely won’t be picked up, freeing up 15.5M in 2019 salary, which puts them around 166m, which means they’re going to be a bit over the 150 budget (but let’s see what gets set when we roll forward). There’s some minor league fluff that likely will be DFA’ed to free up salary commitments
- Likely holes to fill would be a #3 starter, and another good outfield bat
Analysis
- Finances will be tough for the Yankees, as they’re not going to have the budget room for any notable free agents. They could dangle Cervelli and his 2.6 WAR to try and land an upgrade to the rotation, and he’s going to be the main chip they have in a catcher starved market. Justus Sheffield is likely to have better ratings and be useable in game more than his WAR last year (in limited action) shows, same for Eloy Jimenez, we all say how OOTP rated Acuna this season. Hader will be a BEAST, they may look to downgrade from Wade Davis in the bullpen to free up some $$ as well.
- The Yankees will undoubtedly be in the playoff hunt again. If they can flip Cervelli into some additional (and cheaper) depth, they could be well primed to compete for the AL East, and would be a favorite for the Wild Card again.
