2018 Review:
Record: 84-78 3rd in NL West. R/G Scored: T-7 (NL) R/G Against: 7th (NL)
Starting the Offseason:
Lineup: Had the whole team under contract except for Evan Gattis but resigned him quickly. Mookie Betts was reigning AL MVP IRL and besides Josh Donaldson had pretty much average players to fill out the lineup around him. Didn't add anyone to their lineup before or during the season.
Rotation: The Rotation was solid with 5 starters that were slighly above average to average. Chris Archer, Jeff Samardzija, Kevin Gausman, Mike Foltynewicz, and Sonny Gray. Did trade Gray away as a rental in July and got some decent mid tier prospects other than that no changes.
Bullpen: An ok bullpen that still had an elite Cody Allen (in game) and some decent middle relief type guys.
Early/Mid/Late Season:
Didn't have a month where they were 2 games better or worse than .500. Just a very steady season from start to finish. Finished 82-80 2nd in AL West but 18 games back.
Lineup: 9th (NL) in runs scored. Betts was great. Donaldson was very good. Schoop, Peraza and Gattis were ok and everyone else struggled.
Rotation: 2nd (NL) starters' ERA. Archer was great at 12-8 with a 2.51 ERA and 230 Ks. Everyone else was good. No one was injured. All starters finishing with an ERA under 4.00.
Bullpen: 6th (NL) bullpen ERA. Jacob Barnes was pretty great for them. 2.42 ERA 139 Ks in 96.2 IP and 94 GP. 4 relievers had over 90 GP. Overall good showing from the bullpen.
In Conclusion:
With how well the pitched if they could have just found some more hitting they could have made a run at a WC spot. This offseason is going to be much different as they have about half their starting lineup hitting FA but with only 124 Mil on the books they should have plenty of money at filling any holes of players that may leave. They still have a decent rotation but will need to supplement their bullpen with an elite closer.
Trades Overview:
SP Sonny Gray for Henry Martinez, RP Yoshihisa Hirano, CF Jarren Duran, and SP Garrison Bryant - Moving a rental above average SP for a package of mid tier prospects. This is the kind of pack I would expect for this type of pitcher.
I do wonder why Gray was the only player he decided to move as he had several position players that were going to be FA that he probably could have gotten something for. I don't have access to the trade blocks that far back on slack so maybe he did and just didn't get any offers.
Free Agency Overview:
I don't have great resources to find how much each team had at the start of FA but looking back at the 2018 logs looks like he already had 155 Mil on the books so I am sure that didn't leave him with much cap space to make signings and he also pretty much had a full 26 man roster. So because he didn't sign anyone I got to go with a F but that doesn't mean it wasn't the correct thing to do.
