2018 Review:
Record: 95-67 2nd in NL East 1 GB, 2nd in WC. R/G Scored: 9th (NL) R/G Against: T-3rd (NL). Beat CIN in WC game. Lost 3-2 in DIV series.
Starting the Offseason:
Lineup: Had everyone back from a lower tier lineup. Got a boost from better projections for Jesus Aguilar, Ketel Marte, and Amed Rosario. Of course still had the big bopper Mike Stanton, oops mean Giancarlo, in the middle of the lineup. Did end up trading Rosario for David Peralta to upgrade LF. Could have maybe used an upgrade in CF. Leonys Martin does provide good defense though. Overall a solid lineup going into the season.
Rotation: This was a little more up in the air with Dallas Keuchal becoming a FA. Letting Doug Fister and Hyun-jin Ryu go left some holes in the rotation. Phillies filled them with young guys Emmanuel Ramirez there the rule 5 draft and Miguel Castro. Did still have David Price to lead the staff and Godly and Blair as veteran compliments.
Bullpen: Had a very good bullpen with Kenly Jansen, Lou Trivino, Bryan Shaw, Alex Claudio, and Seung-hwan Oh. Signed Jumbo Diaz to provide depth.
Early/Mid/Late Season:
A constantly good team through out the season. Didn't really have many low points in the season. Was in a 3 way dog fight for the NL East lead all season. Was a crazy SEP as they won 9 games in a row to move into a tie for 1st place with the MIA only to lose 5 games in a row then win 4 games in a row including a sweep of MIA in the final series of the year to force a tie and a 1 game playoff for the division winner. Unfortunately they would go on to lose that by 1 run and then lose the WC game by 1 run. Finished 94-69 and an overall good season.
Lineup: 2nd (NL) in runs scored. Lineup mashed lead by who I think is hands down the MVP winner Giancarlo Stanton who walloped his way to a .291/.388/.724 80 HRs (32 more than the next closest) 164 RBIs (53 more than the next closest) and a 196 OPS+. Everyone else in the lineup just had good solid years. The lineup outperformed expectation but that was mainly because of Stanton.
Rotation: 9th (NL) in starters' ERA. Rotation mostly struggled. Ramirez and Godley pitched well but Blair and Castro struggled mightily and Price under performed.
Bullpen: 7th (NL) in bullpen ERA. As a whole pitched very good. Well everyone besides Jansen who had a 4.26 ERA with 8 losses and 6 blown saves. He also gave up a run in the top of the 9th of the WC game which was the deciding run. On the flip side Trivino was exceptionally good posting a 1.95 ERA and 121 Ks in 89 GP an 78.1 IP.
In Conclusion: I think the rotation is what really held this team back preventing them from winning the NL East outright. Will have some work to do this offseason as they will have holes at 1B, 2B, 3B and CF all to fill. Though have a good starting spot to build around Marte, Stanton and Kelly. Should have 50 Mil or so in cap space to make moves.
Trades Overview:
SS Amed Rosario to SD for LF David Peralta - Had redundancy at SS so used it to feel a need in LF. Peralta performed well hitting .278/.347/.477 with 29 HRs and a 123 OPS in 160 GP. Also has another year of team control so I think this trade worked out well for the Phillies.
FA Overview:
RP Jumbo Diaz 3 yr 14.4 Mil - Pitched well. 3.60 ERA 102 Ks in 72 GP and 65 IP. They only thing that worries me about this signing is that he played in Mexico this season so I am not sure how good of a projection he will get going forward. I think a little risky signing him to a 3 yr deal because of this but for 1 year it worked out. C+
Had limited resources so made only 1 move and it worked out in the short term. C+
