1. Mackenzie Gore Pittsburgh Pirates As speculated yesterday, Mackenzie Gore is a top 10 prospect for LHP but he took the top spot. In his age 20 season he dominated the California League, know as a hitters paradise to the tune of 110 K's in 79 innings with a minuscule 1.02 ERA. He was aggressively promoted to AA striking out 25 in 21 innings. If Whitley develops as expected the Pirates top of the rotation is set up for years.
2. Jesus Lazardo Colorado Rockies Another team that combines a top RHP prospect (Kopech at # 4) with a top LHP prospect and Rex isn't done. Lazardo had TJ in high school and missed time twice this year with muscle issues. When healthy he made a brief stop in High A, made 7 starts in AAA and pitched 12 MLB innings in September during the pennant race. Will Rex promote a major league ready pitcher or hold him back ?
3. Brendan McKay Colorado Rockies Tell me if you heard this before, Rex has a top pitching prospect. The Rays are known to cautiously promote their prospects but Brendan McKay was having no part of that. In AA he pitched 42 innings with 62 K's and a 1.30 ERA. In AAA he pitched 32 innings with 40 K's and a 0.84 ERA. With the Rays in a tight pennant race they were forced to call him up where he got a victory while pitching and homered as a batter.
4. Tarik Skubal Los Angeles Dodgers Another team that backs up a top RHP prospect (Grayson Rodriguez, # 10) with a LHP. I had the pleasure of watching him for the first half of last year. He was highly spoken of but pitched only 20 minor league innings so us experts in Lakeland weren't expecting much. He sat at 93 but with two strikes upped it to 97. His breaking pitch is nasty. Our stadium had a promotion that if our pitchers combined for 10 pitches at 95 or above everyone could get a free burrito at Tijuana Flats (a $8 value). Between him and Casey Mize they had to change the promotion after a month to ten batters striking out in a game. Once promoted to AA he struck out 82 batters in 42 innings (not a typo).
5. Nick Lodolo "Draft Eligible" A college pitcher, he was taken 7th overall by the Cincinnati Reds. Was a 1st round comp pick out of high school but didn't sign. He is 606 with a fastball in the low 90's but has hit 96. As a college pitcher from a top program he is expected to move quickly through the minors.
6. Matthew Liberatore San Francisco Giants Another team that backs up a top RHP prospect (Pearson #2) with a top LHP prospect. Just finished his first full minor league season in Low A and is more of a pitcher who sits in the low 90's with three plus pitches. Just traded from the Rays to the Cardinals who know a thing or two about developing pitchers.
7. A J Puk Colorado Rockies Is this Colorado's 1st, 2nd or 3rd LHP prospect. He missed the first half of this year because of TJ surgery. His pure stuff is as good as any LHP in baseball hitting triple digits but has command issues. His slider is in the low 90's which is just unfair. After pitching 25 innings between High A, AA and AAA he made his MLB debut with 10 relief appearances
8. Daniel Lynch Toronto Blue Jays They won 64 games last year but the cupboard isn't bare. Lynch stands 606 but missed a month with a minor arm issue. He is another pitcher that comes from a major college program and sits at 94 - 96. He joins Ryan Weathers, Deivi Garcia and Andres Munoz as young pitchers in the pipeline for the Blue Jays.
9. Brailyn Marquez Pittsburgh Pirates A 3rd pitcher and the 2nd LHP pitcher representing the Pirates in the prospect rankings. He is only 20 years old but has hit 102 on the radar gun and regularly hits triple digits. He struck out 102 in 77 innings but the Cubs are being cautious with his development.
10. D L Hall Washington Nationals Another team that backs up a RHP prospect (Dustin May # 6) with a LHP prospect. Drafted out of high school by the Orioles he sits in the mid 90's but has his 97. He has moved a level each year and should be in AA next year
