Currently in a rebuild. First GM made some poor trade that has put the franchise back a bit. Lets look at their future as of this moment.
Future:
Salary Cap: 111.3 Mil towards guaranteed contracts next season. Should have 20-30 Mil in salary cap.
Lineup: The Astros do have some big league talent already on the roster. C Tucker Barnhart and C Omar Narvaez combined to make a very good catching combo. 3B Colin Moran has been a serviceable in the hot corner. SS Jorge Polanco just had a great season. 1B Dominic Smith smashed in 197 ABs. Hit so good the Mets were playing him in LF to get him ABs. Probably needs to be traded to a team that he can play 1B everyday to reach his true potential. 1B Edwin Encarnacion everyone knows about him. 2B Rougned Odor has played 600+ games and is still only 25 yrs old and if he could ever figure out how not to swing at so many horrible pitches has the power to turn into a great offensive player. LF Trey Mancini is a sold young player, RF Jason Heyward is still one of the best defensive RF in the game and has hit league average the last 2 years. 3B Brian Anderson has been very solid. In their minors they have 3 top 100 prospects in OF Oneil Cruz, SS Jordan Groshans, and 3B Mark Vientos.
Pitching Staff: Robbie Ray is a solid #3 type SP. Carlos Rodon has similar upside but missed most of 2019 with TJ surgery. The minors have Matt Manning who is a consensus top 50 prospect. Justin Dunn is a top 100 prospect and made it to the majors in 2019. Also has Brusdar Graterol, and Adonis Medina both highly rated in their respective organizational prospect lists.
Trades Overview:
SP Blake Snell and RF Gregory Polanco to CIN for SP James Paxton, 1B Edwin Encarnacion, and RP Domingo Acevedo - From an Astros point of view I don't really care for this trade. Blake Snell was the best pitcher in the is trade and had 4 years of control left when traded. Paxton only had 2 years of control and I don't think that EE and Acevedo make up the difference in the value between the 2.
C Victor Caratini and SS Xander Bogaerts, to TB for Brusdar Graterol, RP James Pazos, SS Jorge Polanco, and Tucker Barnhart - I can understand this trade. Getting an upgrade at C. A pretty good RP and a very good SP prospect. Bogaerts is better than Polanco but the difference could be made up by Graterol.
1B Ronald Guzman to KC for RF Jorge Bonifacio, SP Josh Smith, and 3B Kelvin Beltre - Guzman is a meh 1B and didn't get much value for him. Really this trade just doesn't have much long term effect.
SP James Paxton to TB for SP Justin Dunn, SP Jeff Hoffman, 3B Rio Ruiz, 2B Ben Zobrist and SP Carlos Rodon - I do like this trade better than the Snell trade. Got a replacement who still has upside and a top 100 prospect in Justin Dunn. Ruiz and Hoffman are mostly below average MLBers. I would have like to see him flip Zobrist for prospects.
FA Overview:
None.
