Zach McKinstry BOS
Over 450 at bats in Boston help McKinstry hit 15 HRs as their utility man. He hit a respectable .269/.333/.429 which was good for a 1.9 WAR while playing 2B, 3B, LF and RF: managing + defensive numbers at second.
Sean Murphy KC
22 HRs as the everyday catcher for a playoff team, providing strong defense and a 4.1 WAR. .268/.346/.469 line would’ve won him the award in most years, but the Royals started a youth movement, and the competition is fierce.
Will Smith TEX
Smith saw over 500 plate appearances as the everyday man in TEX and produced a 3.0 WAR. Hitting 26 homers in year one is great, but his team was also extremely impressed with his work behind the plate. Only hit .220 but hit 101 OPS+ shows what an asset he is with the stick.
Taylor Guilbeau KC
Led all rookie pitchers in WAR with 3.4 after being the closer for the Royals this year. He stuck out 100 batters in 55.1 innings while saving 37 games. He was able to limit HRs and had an ERA+ of 149.
Brusdar Graterol HOU
In his rookie year, he managed 171 Ks over 156 innings pitched. He was a very consistent starter for the Astros, sporting a 3.52 ERA but also consistently walking batters, with 69; this pulled his WAR down to an even 2.0.
Trent Grisham KC
A near MVP candidate in his first season, Grisham was a catalyst for the Wild Card winning Royals. The best of the bunch of rookies KC called on this year, as he took the rookie triple crown, pacing the young guys with a .297 AVG, 32 HRs, and 95 RBIs. His .297/.403/.557 slash line led to a 7.2 WAR, by far best of all rookies.
