Gerrit Cole STL – 13-10 – 3.19 ERA – 183.2 IP – 228 Ks – 5.1 WAR
His first season in STL saw him take on the number 2 role in a stacked rotation, in which he had a career high 11.2 K/9. He was able to cut his HR allowed from 43 a year ago to 21 this go-round. In a year where his team won the big dance, he also matched a career low WHIP with 1.07.
Corbin Burnes AZ – 15-4 – 2.91 ERA – 176.1 IP – 196 Ks – 5.0 WAR
Another pitching who made the jump from the AL this season, Burnes was able to repeat his performance in almost every category in route to a division crown. His 0.7 HR/9 was tops in the NL and finished top 5 in many other categories. The KC rotation maintained their dominance this year but they certainly wish they could have this kid back.
Lucas Giolito STL – 20-4 – 2.81 ERA – 208 IP – 278 Ks – 6.6 WAR (Leads Majors)
Wow. Turns out an injury adjustment is what G needed to break out. After back-to-back injury plagued seasons, he led the league in wins, Ks, WHIP, FIP, K/9, and WAR. Opponents hit only .183 against him this season, which paced the majors as well.
Zack Wheeler MIA – 17-7 – 2.98 ERA – 220.2 IP – 179 Ks – 4.4 WAR
The ace of a strong Miami team, he forced his way onto the only four men race this season. His 220.2 innings pitched topped the NL, while his 6.7 rWAR was forth in the majors. His team fell just short of the post season, but it wasn’t due to any lack of effort on Wheeler’s part.
